Sweet home, Indiana...

I'm not sure that quite works. But we are, in fact, now home in Indiana. My parents' home, that is. They are graciously allowing us to live with them for a few months, while we wait and figure out what is next.

Our trip was great, and I really want to go back and blog about the pictures, as a family record. Not tonight, however.

For the family waiting eagerly, here are a few pictures from our time here so far:

Final destination: Walkerton, IN

After more than 2 weeks of travel, we drove the 2 hours from Chicago to Walkerton with ease. The time change put us in to Indiana pretty late, but the kids easily went to bed after quickly saying hi to Grandma and Grandpa and new puppy Pebbles. There would be plenty of time for play.

The next day, the fun began.

Pebbles is a very adorable Maltese/Poodle mix. She's a puppy, very smart, and quickly got used to the kids, though she did continue, at times, to treat them as toys.

Chicago

We were so excited to drive down to Chicago on Saturday evening: We got to see Gramma and Grampa, in from California, Uncle Jay and Aunt Vern, enjoy some great food... AND meet baby cousin PJ for the first time! He is absolutely adorable.

WE didn't stay for too long, as 3 active kids in a smaller place with a newborn baby can be a little on the overwhelming side. Again, we'll see them more this summer, so it was easier to say goodbye.

Illinois (and Missouri)

I took no pictures while we drove through Missouri. I meant to, so as to have a record of it, but there wasn't anything notable, and I forgot when we stopped at McDonald's for the bathroom.

Our drive from Iowa City to Mundelein, IL, was easy. We enjoyed the very short drive, making it clear that it's all about what your'e used to doing. Previous to this, we'd never driven with the kids beyond Lake Tahoe from Oakland. Though that did take 4-5 hours if traffic was bad.

Anyway, we were all excited to see cousin Juliana, as it had been almost a year. (Aunt Becca was nice to see, too!). On Friday, we went to the park with the kids while Becca was at work. I wanted my camera, but it would have been dangerous to have it, as Juliana proved fearless and somewhat careless, at least compared to my playground-cautious kids. She leapt without ever thinking, and was amazing in what she could accomplish physically at 2.

After the park, it was clear that a bath was needed. Of course, everyone wanted to be in at the same time.

CeeCee and Juliana are 5 months apart, and Juliana did an admirable job of sharing all of her toys; not just with the older boys, but also with the more threatening toddler.

They loved playing with the car, both together and taking turns. Erik loved pushing them.

It was hard to leave, but we had the benefit of knowing we'd be back later on.

Iowa

Our next day's drive was so much shorter, we took advantage and didn't leave until 10 am. Our stop: Iowa City to spend time with Carl's cousin Bob, wife Beth, and kids C (10.5) and J (7.5). J is 2 weeks older than Erik. Anders was enamored, as he had "real" light sabers and other things for "fightish" play, as Anders deemed it.

We enjoyed our stay with them, staying for 3 nights in order to spend time with them as they were still in school. We mostly went to the park and relaxed during the day.

In California, I had not taken a single picture of blossoming spring, as I was too busy with moving preparations. So it was nice to get to Iowa City and find spring still in full bloom.

The kids loved having me take their picture with Carl while on the tire swing. We had many variations.

Erik also with a loose tooth, but not as obvious

Erik played a new favorite game while we were there: Life.

Kansas

The drive from Boulder to near Kansas City was our longest day. And anyone who has ever driven on 70 across Kansas will know that it's not a particularly exciting drive. 626 miles of, well, boring. By this point the kids were pretty good at driving for the day without driving us crazy, and it wasn't as bad as we thought it might be.

We arrived at Rebecca's house a little groggy, but enjoyed playing outside to unwind and get ready for dinner. L (almost 7) and J (almost 4) were great fun for the kids to play with, and though Rebecca criticized her dinner, I thought it was wonderful.

The next day was Mother's Day, and Sunday. We went to church in the morning, played around after church outside, watched a movie to rest, then had more friends over for a barbeque and fun. It rained on our plans, though, so Eric had to grill outside, and we just hung out inside. The food was great, though! I get hungry just thinking of the potato salad. We met Talitha's kids, 4 more whose ages and initials I know I won't get right.

Anders prefers to use the swings to spin and do crazy tricks

It was a wonderful time, and it was hard to leave the next day.

Colorado

Our destination on our second day of driving was a town between Boulder and Denver. We arrived at Adrienne and Ryan's house without too much difficulty, and not too tired. Dinner was nice, and we all liked meeting T(3 1/2) and K(1), the first 2 kids of the many we'd meet on our trip. I went out to get a few things from the car and enjoyed the sunset, visible from their front door.

The next day we walked to the park in their subdivision. I could handle looking at this every day at the park!

We had a great dinner on the grill the next night. The kids really enjoyed the cupcakes

Adrienne and family were preparing for a train trip/mini vacation the next morning, so we didn't stay the night there. Instead, after dinner we drove to Boulder to stay with Morgan and Wendy and their kids, A (2 1/2) and A (just turned 1). Somehow, I didn't take any pictures whatsoever in Boulder. We had fun, though!
