Our front yard. It's our main place to play outside without driving to a park. In the winter, it's very green, given all of the Northern California rain. However, in the summer it requires a fair bit of water in order to maintain. Considering the fact that it's mostly weedy clover, with a bit of grass mixed in, and also noting the fact that California is officially in a drought, it seems a bit of a waste to water a weed. However, if we don't water it, then the kids want nothing to do with playing on it. There are burrs along with much prickliness of dead weeds.
So, we have known we wanted to change it. This spring, we learned that Anders is highly allergic to grass. That changed our plan to put in some kind of native grass. After a bit more research, Carl found a few places that provided groundcover that isn't living--a perfect solution for our small space!

This picture also shows the sunflowers that Anders I planted together this spring. Sunflowers are such a gratifying plant to do with kids.
